Best Baby Mattress India: Firm, Flat and the Right Size
Firm, flat, and no gap at the edges. Those three decide whether a mattress is safe, and only the first two are easy to check. The gap is the one that matters most and the one nobody can give you a straight number for — published limits run from 20 mm to 4 cm depending on who you ask. |
Firm is not a preference
Every safe-sleep authority says the same thing, so this part is short. A baby's mattress should be firm and flat. A soft surface lets the head sink in, and a sunken face is the mechanism behind a large share of sleep deaths.
The sink test. Press your hand into the middle. A baby's head should sink only a millimetre or two. If your palm leaves a dent you can see, it is too soft for an infant — however comfortable it feels to you. |
This is where Indian listings go wrong. Search for a newborn mattress on Amazon.in and you are offered quilted, cushioned and explicitly "soft" bedding, described for newborns. Soft is the opposite of the recommendation. A thick, plush, frilled mattress is a nice object and a poor place for a baby under one to sleep.
Our full safe sleep guide for India covers the rest — back to sleep, no pillows, no bumpers, nothing loose in the cot.
The gap nobody agrees on
A mattress that is too small for the cot leaves a gap at the edge, and a gap is where a head gets trapped. So you would expect a clear published limit. There is not one.
Source | Maximum gap it gives |
20 mm | |
20 mm | |
Various retailers | 2 cm |
over 4 cm is non-compliant | |
4 cm, measured with the mattress pushed to one side |
A factor of two between published safety limits for the same hazard. We are not going to pick one and present it as the answer.
So use the hands-on check instead. Seat the mattress, push it firmly to one side, then try to fit two fingers — index and middle — into the gap on the opposite side. If more than two fingers go in, the mattress is too small for that cot. Note this is a practical check rather than a measured standard, which is exactly why it survives the disagreement above.
If this sounds familiar, it is the same problem we found with Indian kids shoe charts and with product labels. Published numbers look authoritative and do not agree.
Coir or foam, in Indian conditions
Coir | Foam | |
Firmness | Naturally firm, which suits an infant | Varies enormously — read the density, not the word "firm" |
Humidity | Absorbs moisture. In a coastal or monsoon-season flat it can hold damp and grow mould inside where you cannot see it | Sheds moisture better, but a wet nappy soaking in will still do damage |
Airing | Needs real airing — out of the cot, on its side, in moving air | Easier, but still worth doing |
Lifespan | Long if kept dry, short if not | Compresses over time, and a dented foam mattress is no longer flat |
Whichever you pick, the waterproof cover is not optional in India. It is what stands between a nappy leak and the inside of the mattress, and the inside is where mould starts. A fitted waterproof sheet under the cotton one costs very little and doubles the useful life.
In Mumbai, Chennai, Kochi or anywhere with a real monsoon, lift the mattress out and stand it on edge for a few hours every couple of weeks. That one habit beats the coir-versus-foam argument entirely.
What we could actually verify
Priced on 11 October 2026. Two, not ten, and the next section explains why.
Mattress | Size | Price |
115 x 60 x 7.5 cm | ₹2,199 | |
120 x 60 x 7.5 cm | ₹2,199 |
Same product, same price, 5 cm apart. That is the whole lesson of this page in one line. Those 5 cm are the difference between a snug fit and a gap you can get two fingers into. Measure the inside of your cot before you order, not the outside. |
Most Indian cots are near 120 x 60 cm, but "near" is not good enough here. Measure the interior at the narrowest point, and buy the mattress that matches it — not the bigger one in case, and not the smaller one because it was in stock.
Why this list is short
Most results are not cot mattresses. They are quilted floor bedding, godaris and folding gaddas sold under the same search term. Useful objects, not infant sleep surfaces.
Many listings publish no usable dimensions, and on a product where the size is the safety feature, a listing without a size is not a candidate. We hit the same thing costing out gear for a small flat.
We did not test firmness ourselves. No lab, no density measurements. This is a buying guide built on published specs and safe-sleep guidance, and we would rather say so.
What to skip
Soft, quilted or pillow-top anything for a baby under one.
Cot bumpers, sold with half the mattress sets on the market. They are a suffocation and entrapment risk and no safe-sleep authority recommends them.
A pillow. Not before one, and not really needed after.
A second-hand mattress, unless it is from your own earlier baby and has been kept dry. You cannot inspect the inside of one.
Memory foam. It is designed to let you sink in. That is the one property you do not want.
Questions parents ask
How firm should a baby mattress be?
Firm enough that a baby's head sinks only a millimetre or two. If your palm leaves a visible dent, it is too soft for an infant.
What size gap is safe between mattress and cot?
Published limits disagree — 20 mm, 2 cm and 4 cm all appear in official and retail guidance. Use the two-finger test instead: push the mattress to one side and if more than two fingers fit in the opposite gap, it is too small.
Is coir or foam better for a baby in India?
Coir is naturally firm, which suits infants, but it absorbs moisture and can grow mould in humid conditions. Foam handles damp better but varies in firmness. A waterproof cover and regular airing matter more than which you pick.
What size mattress fits an Indian cot?
Usually around 120 x 60 cm, but measure the inside of your own cot. We found two mattresses at the same price 5 cm apart in length, and 5 cm is the difference between snug and unsafe.
Do I need a waterproof mattress protector?
In India, yes. It is what keeps a nappy leak out of the inside of the mattress, which is where mould starts and where you cannot inspect.
Can my baby sleep on a regular gadda?
Plenty of Indian families co-sleep on a firm floor mattress and that is a different arrangement with its own rules. What matters is the same: firm, flat, no gaps to roll into, and nothing soft around the face.
