150 Modern Short Indian Baby Names
NavParent Verdict Two things drive Indian naming right now: shorter - two syllables, four to six letters - and portable, meaning it survives being said by someone who has never seen it written. The names below are grouped by that second test. If there is any chance your child studies or works abroad, the pronunciation check is worth doing knowingly rather than discovering it at eighteen. And whichever you pick: register it within 21 days, because adding a name to a birth certificate later is a separate application. |

The four tests before you finalise
1. Say it a hundred times out loud. Shouted across a park. In an angry voice. Shortened by her friends into whatever they will shorten it to.
2. Check the initials. With your surname. Written out.
3. The pronunciation test. Say it once to someone unfamiliar with Indian names and ask them to repeat it. Retroflex consonants and th/dh distinctions get mangled - not a reason to avoid a name, just something to decide knowingly.
4. Search it. Both as a name and as a word in other languages. Two minutes now.
Then register it
Within 21 days. Many Indian hospitals register "Baby of [Mother]", and adding the name later is a separate application with affidavits. If you have decided, give it at registration even if the Namkaran is weeks away.
