Diaper Size Chart India: By Weight, Every Brand
The short version. Go by weight, not age. Most Indian brands use the same bands — S 4–8 kg, M 7–12 kg, L 9–14 kg, XL 12–17 kg — but not all of them do, and every band overlaps the next by two or three kilos. The overlap is where people get it wrong. |
Diaper size chart for Indian brands
Weight in kilograms. Read along your baby's weight, not their age.
Teddyy is the one to watch. Its bands are genuinely different: M is 6–11 kg rather than 7–12, L stops at 13 kg rather than 14, and XL does not start until 13 kg. If you switch to Teddyy at the top of a size, you may need to go up where you would not have with another brand. |
A note on where these came from. Pampers' figures are from their own India size guide and Teddyy's from their own site. The rest were read off the brands' Amazon.in listings, where the weight band is printed in the product title. Blank cells mean we could not confirm that size for that brand, not that it does not exist.
The overlaps are the whole problem
Look at a baby weighing 7.5 kg. On most of these charts they fit Small (4–8), Medium (7–12) and nothing else — but Small is about to run out and Medium has five kilos of room left.
If your baby weighs | Sizes that technically fit | What to actually buy |
4–5 kg | NB, S | S, unless they are very small |
7–8 kg | S, M | M. You are at the top of S and it will not last a fortnight |
9–12 kg | M, L | L if there are red marks or night leaks, otherwise M |
12–14 kg | L, XL | L while it still fits. XL is bulkier and many babies potty-train before needing it |
15–17 kg | XL, XXL | XL |
When a baby sits between two sizes, go up. A loose nappy leaks less than a tight one, which is the opposite of what most people assume.
Four signs you are in the wrong size
Red marks around the thighs or waist after you take it off. The clearest signal, and the one people ignore because the baby does not complain.
Leaks at night but not in the day. Usually too small, not too absorbent-poor. Go up a size before you change brand.
The tabs or waistband reach right to the edge. No overlap left means no room left.
Poo escapes up the back. Almost always a size problem, not a brand problem.
Age is a bad guide, and here is why
Most charts also print an age column. We have left it out on purpose. A nine-month-old can weigh seven kilos or eleven, and the chart would put them three sizes apart.
If you do not know your baby's current weight, the clinic has it from the last vaccination visit. Use that number.
Taped nappies or pants?
Taped | Pants | |
Best for | Newborn to about 6 months | Once they roll and crawl |
Why | Lie-down changes, adjustable fit, umbilical notch | You cannot pin down a rolling baby |
Cost | Usually cheaper per nappy | Usually dearer |
Most Indian brands sell pants in the larger sizes and taped in the smaller ones, which tracks this switch.
What this chart does not tell you
It is not a fit guarantee. Two babies of the same weight can be shaped very differently, and a slim baby in the right weight band still leaks at the legs.
Bands change. Brands revise sizing without announcing it. The chart on the pack in your hand beats this page.
We did not verify every size for every brand. Blank cells are gaps in what we could confirm, not claims that the size does not exist.
Questions parents ask
What diaper size should I buy by weight?
S for 4–8 kg, M for 7–12 kg, L for 9–14 kg, XL for 12–17 kg on most Indian brands. If your baby is between two, buy the bigger one.
Is diaper size the same across all brands in India?
Mostly, but not always. Pampers, MamyPoko, Huggies and others share the common bands. Teddyy does not — its L stops at 13 kg instead of 14.
When should I move up a diaper size?
When you see red marks after a change, when night leaks start, or when the waistband has no overlap left. Do not wait for the pack to run out.
What size diaper for a newborn?
NB up to about 5 kg, and buy one pack only. Plenty of Indian babies are into S within two or three weeks and you cannot return an opened carton.
Is a bigger diaper better for night?
Usually yes, if your baby is near the top of their band. A size up holds more and leaks less. Going two sizes up does not work — it gaps at the legs.
What diaper size does a 1-year-old wear?
Whatever their weight says. A one-year-old might be 8 kg or 12 kg, which is M or L. Weigh first.
