How Many Diapers Does a Baby Use? By Age and Cost
The short version. About 10 to 12 a day in the first month, settling to 6 a day by the first birthday. Across the whole nappy years that is roughly 5,400 nappies — somewhere between ₹95,000 and ₹1,70,000 depending entirely on which brand you pick. |
How many nappies a day, by age
Age | Per day | Per month | Why |
0–1 month | 10–12 | ~330 | Newborns feed constantly and go constantly. This is the peak |
1–3 months | 8–10 | ~270 | Starting to settle into a rhythm |
3–6 months | 7–8 | ~225 | Fewer, bigger nappies |
6–12 months | 6–7 | ~195 | Solids start; stools get less frequent and more solid |
1–2 years | 5–6 | ~165 | Down to roughly one every four hours |
2 years+ | 4–5 | ~135 | Until potty training, which is its own timeline |
These are typical ranges, not measurements. Your baby will have days well outside them, especially in the first fortnight and during any illness. Use the numbers for budgeting, not for worrying.
What that costs
Multiply the monthly count by the cost of one nappy. We priced those on the Large packs in our three-brand comparison: ₹18.73 for Huggies at MRP, ₹21.86 for MamyPoko, ₹31.80 for Pampers Premium Care — and ₹17.05 for MamyPoko at online prices.
Age | Nappies/month | Cheapest (₹17/nappy) | Mid (₹21.86) | Pampers Premium (₹31.80) |
0–1 month | 330 | ₹5,610 | ₹7,214 | ₹10,494 |
1–3 months | 270 | ₹4,590 | ₹5,902 | ₹8,586 |
3–6 months | 225 | ₹3,825 | ₹4,919 | ₹7,155 |
6–12 months | 195 | ₹3,315 | ₹4,263 | ₹6,201 |
1–2 years | 165 | ₹2,805 | ₹3,607 | ₹5,247 |
The whole nappy years, start to finish: roughly 5,400 nappies. At ₹17 each that is about ₹92,000. At ₹31.80 it is about ₹1,72,000. The difference — around ₹80,000 — is a brand choice, not a quality one. |
An honest caveat on that range. It applies Large-size per-nappy prices across every age, and smaller sizes cost less per nappy because there is less material in them. So the real total sits below the top of that range. We have not priced every size of every brand, and we would rather give you the method than a falsely precise number.
How many to buy at once
When | Buy | Why |
Before the birth | ONE pack of newborn | Many babies are into S within two or three weeks |
First month | 2–3 packs at a time | You are still learning which size fits |
After 3 months | Monthly, in the biggest pack | The cost per nappy drops sharply in bigger packs |
Near a size change | Back to small packs | Nothing wastes money like half a carton of the wrong size |
Buying in bulk saves money. Buying in bulk one week before a size change loses it.
Where the money actually goes
The first month looks expensive and it is, but it is one month. The long tail is what costs — the 1-to-2-year stretch is only five or six a day, but it runs for 365 days and comes to around 2,000 nappies on its own.
Which means the brand you settle into at around one year old decides most of your total spend. That is the decision worth ten minutes of arithmetic, not the newborn pack.
Ways to actually reduce the number
Do not change a nappy that is only slightly wet at night. Modern nappies hold far more than one wee. Waking a baby to change them costs you a nappy and an hour of sleep.
Change immediately for poo, every time. This is the one that causes rash, and a rash costs more than a nappy. See rash creams.
Get the size right. Leaks mean extra changes, extra washing and extra nappies.
Start nappy-free floor time early. Twenty minutes a day on a towel is good for the skin and saves a nappy.
Do not stockpile the size they are currently in.
Questions parents ask
How many diapers does a newborn use in a day?
Ten to twelve in the first month. That is the peak, and it drops steadily from there.
How many diapers does a baby use in a month?
About 330 in the first month, around 195 by six to twelve months, and about 165 in the second year.
How many diapers do I need for the first year?
Roughly 2,700. Do not buy them in advance — sizes change about five times in that year.
How much do diapers cost per month in India?
Between ₹2,800 and ₹10,500 a month depending on the brand and your baby's age. The first month is the dearest and the brand choice matters more than anything else.
Is it cheaper to buy diapers in bulk?
Yes, per nappy — usually meaningfully so. The exception is right before a size change, when a large pack of the wrong size wipes out the saving.
How many diapers until potty training?
How we worked this out
Daily-use ranges are the conventional figures used by paediatric and parenting sources, presented as ranges because that is what they are. Everything after that is our arithmetic: daily rate × days, multiplied by the per-nappy prices we calculated from pack MRPs on 8 October 2026 in the three-brand comparison. Every input is on that page, so you can redo it with your own numbers.
