Girl Child Schemes in India: Every State Scheme and How They Stack
In short Almost every Indian state runs its own girl child scheme on top of the central PMMVY and Janani Suraksha Yojana, and they generally stack. Most families claim one of the three because nobody tells them these are separate programmes. The single most useful question to ask at your district office, in these exact words: which state schemes am I eligible for in addition to PMMVY and JSY? Phrased that way, the answer improves a great deal. |
On this page: the central layer, girl child schemes state by state, how to claim, the six things that cause rejection, keeping the money alive.
Start with the central layer
Scheme | What it gives |
|---|---|
PMMVY | 5,000 rupees for a first child, 6,000 for a second if she is a girl |
Janani Suraksha Yojana | Cash incentive for institutional delivery |
Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana | Savings account for a girl under 10, tax free |
NPS Vatsalya | Minor pension account |
Ayushman Bharat | Health cover, if eligible |
These stack with each other and with state schemes. Read that sentence twice, because it is the whole point of this page.

Scheme names, amounts and eligibility change with state governments, and some lapse entirely. Treat this as a starting list for the right question at your district office, not as current entitlement detail. Verify locally before applying. |
How to actually claim
Start at your Anganwadi centre. Register the pregnancy early and collect the MCP card.
Ask the ASHA or ANM worker which state schemes apply. They usually know better than any website.
Then the District Women and Child Development office, or the collectorate, for the state scheme specifically.
Ask the stacking question in those exact words.
Every one of these is free to apply for. Anyone charging a processing fee is running a scam, and it is worth reporting to your CDPO office. |
Documents to keep ready
Mother's and father's Aadhaar
Bank passbook with the account in the mother's name, Aadhaar-seeded and DBT-enabled
The child's birth certificate
MCP card and immunisation record
Domicile or residence proof, which most state schemes require and many families do not hold
Income certificate, since many state schemes are income-linked
Caste certificate where relevant
The six things that cause rejection
Bank account not in the mother's name. The single biggest.
Account not Aadhaar-seeded or DBT-enabled. Accepted, then the money never arrives.
Name mismatch across Aadhaar, bank and application, down to a middle initial.
No domicile certificate. Required by most state schemes, and the commonest state-specific blocker.
Late registration, missing the first instalment window.
No acknowledgement kept, so nobody can trace a stalled file.
Every one is preventable in an afternoon before you apply.
Keeping the money alive
Where a scheme pays a maturity amount at 18 or 21, check whether it is deposited into a specific account and whether you need to maintain it. Several state schemes lapse quietly if conditions are not met, usually school enrolment, immunisation records or an annual declaration.
Put the review dates in your calendar the day you apply. Schemes lapse silently, and nobody writes to tell you. |
Frequently asked questions
Do these girl child schemes really stack?
Central and state schemes generally operate independently. Some state schemes exclude beneficiaries of a specific other scheme, so ask explicitly rather than assuming either way.
We moved states after the baby was born.
Domicile requirements usually apply to the state where you are resident and registered. Ask in your current state.
Is there anything for boys?
Maternity benefits like PMMVY and JSY are not gender-linked for a first child. Most girl child schemes are, by design, because they exist to counter a specific demographic problem.
