How to Teach Children Good Manners, by Age (Without Nagging)

Manners are not about performing for guests. They are about a child learning that other people have feelings too. That is why nagging rarely works, and copying you almost always does.

Manners are caught, not forced

Your child will do what you do far more than what you tell them. Say please and thank you to them, and to the house help, the auto driver and the shopkeeper. They are watching all of it.

What to expect by age

  • Ages 3 to 4: please, thank you and sorry, mostly by copying you.

  • Ages 5 to 7: greeting elders, waiting their turn, basic table manners.

  • Ages 8 to 10: thanking a host, phone and guest etiquette, reading the room.

  • Ages 11 to 12: writing a thank-you message, disagreeing politely.

The three that matter most

If you focus on only three, make them these: please and thank you as a reflex, greeting people warmly, and waiting for their turn without interrupting. Everything else grows from these.

What not to do

  • Do not shame. 'Say sorry right now' in front of everyone teaches fear, not manners.

  • Do not over-prompt. One gentle reminder is enough.

  • Do not save manners for guests. If it only appears for visitors, it is a performance, not a habit.

Common questions

This is one lesson inside NavParent Grow, our step-by-step programme for building character in children aged 3 to 12. The first lesson for your child's age is free.

At what age do manners start?

Around two, children can copy please and thank you. Real understanding of why comes later, so expect copying first and meaning second.

Should I correct my child in front of guests?

No. Correcting a child in front of others usually causes shame, not learning. Prompt gently in the moment, and talk about it later in private.

My child is rude only at home. Is that normal?

Yes. Many children save their hardest behaviour for the people they feel safest with. Hold the same expectations calmly and it settles.
